Pepperdine sets FG% record in win over Denver

ANCHORAGE – Forward Stacy Davis scored 22 points to lead a record-setting offensive effort Friday as Pepperdine defeated Denver 68-56 in the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout consolation semifinals at Sullivan Arena.

Davis shot 8 of 9 from the field as the Waves (5-2) burned the nets for a Shootout-record 71.4 field-goal percentage. The former mark of 69.8 percent was set by Iowa against Northeastern in the 1986 title game.

The Pioneers (0-4) were led by 20 points from guard Jalen Love but wound up playing catch-up all day after falling behind 38-15 at halftime. Pepperdine's defensive effort also marked the third-fewest points allowed in a first half in the 36-year history of the tournament.

Every Waves player shot at least 50 percent from the field, including center Brendan Lane, who scored 12 points on 3-of-6 shooting and added five assists. The West Coast Conference squad also got a game-high seven assists from point guard Jeremy Major.

Pepperdine moves on to play Indiana State for fourth place Saturday at 2 p.m., while Denver will take on host Alaska Anchorage for seventh place at noon.
