Seawolves fall to #19 Wildcats in Logsdon Classic

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Alaska Anchorage got 14 points apiece from newcomers Dom Hunter and Kalidou Diouf but could not pull off the upset against 19th-ranked Chico State, falling 74-64 in men's basketball action at The Wolves' Den on Saturday night in the Ron Logsdon Classic.

The Seawolves (0-4) also used 10 points and six assists from junior point guard to stay within striking distance through the game.

The Wildcats (2-0) were led by a game-high 18 points from guard Robert Duncan, while forward Jordan Semple added 13 points, five rebounds, three assists and three blocks for the defending NCAA Div. II West Region champions.

After trailing 29-25 at halftime, the Seawolves got a quick three-pointer from Travis Thompson and a jumper from McGill to take a 30-29 lead. McGill added a steal and converted a traditional three-point play to give the Seawolves a 35-34 advantage with 14:25 remaining, but Chico State answered with an 8-0 run to take the lead for good.

The Seawolves drew within 63-58 with 2:54 on the clock when Hunter was fouled on a three-point attempt and drained all three free throws. Duncan swished a three-point at the other end, however, and the Wildcats clinched the game at the free-throw line.

Diouf, a redshirt freshman from Germany, shot 6 of 9 from the floor and grabbed a team-high six rebounds, along with two blocks, for the best game of his young career. Hunter, 6-foot guard from Eastern Arizona College, shot 2 of 6 from three-point range and drained all six of his free throws in 17 minutes of action.

UAA was 18 of 19 from the charity stripe as a team.

The Seawolves return to the Alaska Airlines Center for a pair of games against Northwest Indian College next week. Tip-off is 5:15 p.m. on Friday and 2 p.m. on Saturday.
