Stafford propels Seawolves past Crusaders

NAMPA, Idaho – Teancum Stafford scored all 19 of his points in the second half Saturday to lead Alaska Anchorage to a 76-64 men's basketball victory over Northwest Nazarene at the Johnson Sports Center.

The Seawolves (15-11, 8-7 GNAC) also got 19 points and four assists from junior guard Travis Thompson as they swept the season series from NNU and earned their fifth Great Northwest Athletic Conference road win in their last six tries.

Forward Kevin Rima had 19 points and seven rebounds to lead the Crusaders, who suffered their ninth straight loss.

UAA took the lead in the first five minutes and never surrendered it. After Rima drew NNU within 29-28 on a jumper at the 4:40 mark, Seawolf guard Kyle Fossman and forward Christian Leckband swished consecutive three-pointers, and UAA forged a 39-33 lead at halftime.

Stafford took over after the break, sinking three three-pointers and a free throw over a 2-minute span to give UAA a 53-38 lead at the 16:16 mark. After going scoreless and picking up two fouls in the first half, the junior wing from Auburn, Wash., shot 6 of 9 (5 of 7 3FGs) in the second stanza, while grabbing all four of his rebounds.

Meanwhile, Thompson scored double figures for the 24th time in 26 games as the GNAC's second-leading scorer (21.5 ppg) shot 7 of 12 from the field.

Senior guard Colton Lauwers started 4-of-5 from three-point range and finished with 14 points and five rebounds, while Fossman finished with 11 points and four assists.

UAA also got a nice lift off the bench from the interior tandem of Leckband and junior center Brad Mears, which accounted for nine points on 4-of-4 shooting.

The Seawolves outshot the Crusaders 51 percent to 46 percent and earned a slight 31-30 advantage on the boards.

UAA returns home for its final two home games ever at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex, Thursday against Saint Martin's and Saturday against Western Oregon. Tip-off both nights is 7:30 p.m.

NOTES: With their scoring totals Saturday, Fossman (1,137 pts, 12th place) and Thompson (1,117, 14th) both moved up a spot on the Seawolves' career points list … Thompson picked up his 84th career steal to move into the top 20 on that list as well … with the first of his two three-pointers Saturday, Thompson joined Fossman, Mark Drake (243, 2001-05) and Jim Hajdukovich (238, 1995-99) as the fourth UAA player with 200 three-pointers … Fossman earned his 70th victory in a Seawolf uniform and now sits alone at No. 10 on UAA's all-time wins list.
