UAA handles Saints for 3rd straight win

ANCHORAGE – Sophomore point guard Brian McGill scored 27 points Thursday to help Alaska Anchorage pull away for an 88-76 men's basketball victory over Saint Martin's at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

The Seawolves (16-11, 9-7 GNAC) also got 18 points and six assists from senior guard Kyle Fossman as they stretched their win streak to three games and swept the season series from SMU.

The Saints (8-15, 5-10) were led by 23 points and four assists from guard Evan Coulter as they shot 51.5 percent, but the visitors from Lacey, Wash., were outscored 39-12 from the three-point line and 21-4 at the free-throw line.

Fossman and junior guard Travis Thompson hit consecutive three-pointers to begin the scoring, and the Seawolves never relinquished the lead. Saint Martin's drew within 27-22 on a jumper by Coulter with 6:29 to play in the first half before UAA answered with an 8-0 run that included three-pointers from Christian Leckband and McGill.

The Seawolves led 42-31 at halftime and extended the lead to as much as 63-41 on Boomer Blossom's three-pointer at the 12:27 mark.

McGill tallied the second-highest point total of his career by shooting 8 of 12 from the floor (2-2 3FGs) and 9 of 10 from the free-throw line. The Clackamas, Ore., native added three assists and four rebounds.

Meanwhile, Fossman drained 5 of 9 from three-point range and did not commit a turnover in 40 minutes of action. As a team, UAA – the NCAA Div. II leader in fewest turnovers per game – committed only four giveaways on the night, coming one shy of the school record, set twice in the last two weeks.

All five UAA starters scored at least nine points, with forwards Teancum Stafford and Colton Lauwers posting identical lines of 9 points, four rebounds and three assists.

Meanwhile, Thompson, the Great Northwest Athletic Conference's second-leading scorer (21.5 ppg), finished with 15 points, five assists and five rebounds, shooting 5 of 8 from the field.

With the win, UAA now stands alone in fourth place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings with just two games left in the regular season. The Seawolves close their home slate Saturday with the program's final game ever at the WFSC – a 7:30 p.m. tip against Western Oregon – and finish Feb. 27 with a key road contest at Alaska Fairbanks, which leads UAA by only one game in the race for third place.

NOTES: Saturday's WFSC finale against Western Oregon will feature a 'white-out' promotion, with all fans receiving t-shirts to commemorate the final game at the gym … UAA will move into the brand-new Alaska Airlines Center this fall … Fossman moved into 11thh place on UAA's career scoring (1,155 pts) and assists (246) lists, while the Haines product is now just seven three-pointers short of the career record of 243, held by Mark Drake (2001-05) … with his 71st win in a Seawolf uniform, Fossman tied Jim Hajdukovich (1995-99) and Chris Hamey (1995-2000) for 8th on UAA's all-time list … UAA improved to 26-7 against Saint Martin's, including an 18-1 mark in Anchorage.
