Seawolves send 'Farg' out in record style

ANCHORAGE – Playing in his final home game and Alaska Anchorage's last men's basketball game ever at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex, senior guard Kyle Fossman scored a career-high 40 points and broke the school and Great Northwest Athletic Conference records with 12 three-pointers in a 96-77 blowout of Western Oregon on Saturday night.

The Seawolves (17-11, 10-7 GNAC) also got 33 points and six assists from junior guard Travis Thompson as they clinched a spot in next month's GNAC Tournament and tied their own school and GNAC record – set earlier this year against Northland International – with 27 three-pointers.

The Wolves (15-11, 8-8) were led by 19 points and five steals from reserve guard Rodney Webster as the visitors from Monmouth lost for the ninth straight time in the head-to-head series.

UAA opened the game with 10 straight three-pointers – including four by Fossman – before making a two-point field goal on Thompson's layup with 7:54 on the clock. WOU's Jordan Wiley sliced his team's deficit to 35-32 on a three-pointer with 4:16 left in the half, but Fossman got open for two more treys and UAA took a 43-35 lead at halftime.

After scoring just eight points in the first half, Thompson heated up following the break and drained 6 of 7 treys in the final 20 minutes. His three-pointer with 13:39 remaining stretched the lead to 66-44, and the Seawolves earned their largest advantage at 87-58 with 6 minutes left.

In all, the Seawolves tied or broke four school three-point records, including Fossman surpassing Mark Drake (243, 2001-05) for the program's career mark early in the second half; he now has 248 treys in his four seasons. With Thompson and Fossman running their season totals to 104 and 103, respectively, the pair also broke Kemmy Burgess's season record of 100 treys, set in 2003-04.

Senior Colton Lauwers added 12 points on 4-of-6 long-range shooting as UAA finished 27 of 41 (.659) on threes. Sophomore point guard Brian McGill scored just three points but dished 10 assists against his former team, while junior swingman Teancum Stafford had five points, five rebounds, two blocks and a season-high four assists.

Before the game it was announced that Stafford – a Second Team Academic All-American  with a 4.0 GPA – will forego his final year of eligibility. The Auburn, Wash., native is recently married and will graduate this May with a degree in psychology.

For Fossman – who shot 12 of 16 from long range and 14 of 18 overall – Saturday's performance topped his previous career-highs of 28 points and seven three-pointers. He also became just the fifth player in program history to reach the 40-point plateau, tying for the fourth-most points in Seawolf single-game history.

UAA closes the regular season with a Thursday (7 p.m.) showdown at Alaska Fairbanks (16-9, 11-6), which leads the Seawolves by one game in the race for third place in the GNAC. A Seawolf win would mean a season sweep of their rivals and give UAA the No. 3 seed for the GNAC Tournament, which begins Mar. 5 in Lacey, Wash.

NOTES: UAA finishes with a 399-84 all-time mark at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex, where it has hosted the majority of its games since 1978 … the Seawolves will move into the brand-new Alaska Airlines Center next fall … Fossman moved up two spots to No. 9 (1,195 pts) on UAA's career scoring list, passing Chris Hamey (1,168, 1995-2000) and Drake (1,173)  … Thompson moved into 12th place on the career scoring list, now with 1,165 … with his sixth 30-plus effort this season, Thompson joined Jesse Jackson (16 times, 1985-87), Jason Kaiser (13, 1993-95), Jeff Martin (7, 1982-84) and Peter Bullock (6, 2000-04) as just the fifth Seawolf to have at least six 30-point games in his career … McGill became the seventh UAA player to have at least three 10-assist performances in his career … Fossman broke the old UAA single-game record of 10 three-pointers, set by former teammate Brandon Walker, who had 40 points on 10-of-15 long-range shooting in a road win over WOU, Feb. 19, 2011 … Walker, Western Washington's Derrick Webb (1/28/10 vs WOU) and Humboldt State's Issac Gildea (2/21/02 vs Saint Martin's) had been tied for the previous GNAC mark with 10 treys in a game … with at least 19 treys in five different games, five of the top six single-game three-point totals in Seawolf history have been set this year.
