Seawolves soar over Eagles, 108-67

ANCHORAGE – Junior forward Corey Hammell collected another double-double with 24 points and 12 rebounds Monday to help Alaska Anchorage run away with a 108-67 men's basketball victory over Northwest Indian College at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (9-4) also got 21 points from junior guard Sekou 'Suki' Wiggs as they completed their non-conference season against the visitors from Bellingham, Wash.

The Eagles (0-16) got a game-high 33 points from guard Mike Schjang, Jr., who shot 12 of 17 from the field, including 7 of 9 from three-point range.

UAA controlled things from the start, scoring the first six points and jumping to a 25-8 lead on Damien Fulp's layup at the 13:30 mark. Junior guard Drew Peterson knocked down a three-pointer just before the half to make it 61-30 at the break, equaling the 11th-most points scored by a Seawolf team in the opening 20 minutes.

Hammell shot 7 of 8 from the field and junior forward Christian Leckband was 7 of 9 as UAA shot 55 percent (33 of 60) overall. The Seawolves also made 45 trips to the free-throw line, with Hammell going 10 of 12 and Wiggs 10 of 13. Wiggs added three assists, three steals and block as he ran his school-record streak to 13 straight games with 20 or more points to start the season.

Meanwhile, Hammell collected his eighth double-double in just 13 games and improved his Great Northwest Athletic Conference-leading rebound average to 10.0 rpg. His 24 points matched a season-high for the transfer from Santa Rosa Junior College.

Leckband finished with 16 points, five rebounds and two blocks, and junior forward Tayler Thompson equaled his career high for the third time with 10 points. Spencer Svejcar and Diante Mitchell tallied eight points apiece and combined for nine assists as all 11 active Seawolves got into the scoring column.

UAA retakes the court Saturday for its annual exhibition game against the Seawolf Alumni. That contest starts at 2 p.m. at the Alaska Airlines Center.
