Wiggs, Pomrehn propel Seawolves past Wolves, 81-73

ANCHORAGE – Senior guard Suki Wiggs scored 25 points and the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team got a career-high 12 points from reserve guard Ashton Pomrehn on Thursday to earn an 81-73 victory over Western Oregon at the Alaska Airlines Center.

Senior guard Spencer Svejcar added 12 points as the Seawolves (12-5, 6-3 GNAC) improved to 10-0 at home and stayed within two games of the lead in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference race.

The Wolves (8-9, 5-4) were led by 17 points on 5-of-10 shooting from reserve guard Demetrius Trammell as the defending GNAC champs and 2016 NCAA Div. II national semifinalists made 10 of 20 from long range, but they were hurt by a 30-21 rebounding disadvantage and outshot 53 percent to 48 percent overall.

Wiggs – the GNAC Preseason Player of the Year and the nation's 11th-leading scorer (22.9 ppg) entering the game – sank 8 of 16 shots, including 5 of 8 on threes, and all four of his free throws to keep UAA ahead most of the night.

The Seawolves trailed 15-11 before Wiggs nailed a trey and fed Pomrehn for a layup to stoke a 10-0 run, grabbing the lead for good. UAA led 40-33 at halftime and provided an answer each time the visitors made a run in the second half.

After a layup by WOU's Connor Thompson made it 62-59 with 9:28 left, UAA's Corey Hammell sank two free throws and Wiggs snagged a steal and dished to Svejcar for a fastbreak layup. The Wolves would not score again until the 5:48 mark as UAA's league-leading defense did the rest.

Senior center Connor Devine keyed the defensive effort again with three blocks and multiple affected shots – along with 10 points (5-8 FG), four rebounds, two assists and no turnovers – and Hammell contributed 10 points and seven boards.

The victory snapped a two-game skid against WOU, which was ranked No. 1 in the nation when it won 64-58 in last year's Seawolf home finale.

The Seawolves complete the first half of GNAC play Saturday at 7 p.m. when they host Concordia, Ore. (7-9, 3-6) at the Alaska Airlines Center. Call 907-786-1562 for tickets or visit GoSeawolves.com for more information.

NOTES: Wiggs tallied at least 25 points for the 17th time in 49 games as a Seawolf and passed former All-American Taylor Rohde (1,143 points, 2010-12) for No. 14 on UAA's career scoring list, now with 1,162 points … Wiggs also leapfrogged Seawolf Hall-of-Famer Jesse Jackson (331 FTs, 1985-87) for No. 4 on UAA's free throws made list, now with 332 … Hammell's seven rebounds increased his career total to exactly 500, becoming the ninth Seawolf to reach that figure … Devine swatted multiple shots for the seventh game in a row, following a pair of career-high 6-block efforts in the last two games … Devine's 39 blocks are already 10th on UAA's single-season list and within 24 of the program record (63, Serge Using, 1998-99).
