Caleb, Seawolves shine at GNAC Champs

SPOKANE, WASH. – University of Alaska Anchorage freshman Joshua Caleb earned the GNAC Performance of the Year after winning the 60 and 200 in record times at the GNAC Indoor Track and Field Championships Tuesday.

Caleb won the 60 in a time of 6.73 after setting the all-time GNAC record and the GNAC Championship record of 6.70 in the prelims on Monday. He followed up with a win in the 200 in meet record time of 21.18. The time ranks sixth in Div. II and also established a new GNAC all-time record. Caleb concluded the day by running the fastest split (47.78) on the 4x400 relay that finished second in 3:18.33, the sixth-fastest time in UAA history. Other members of the relay included Riday Jana, Anders Larsen and Kevin Angarita.

The Seawolves won GNAC Championships in two other events.

Kevin Angarita won the 400 in a school-record time of 47.88, and Jess Chisar won the 800 in 2:12.35.

Michael Zapherson placed second in the 3,000 in 8:26.65.

"We had a great two days," said head coach Ryan McWilliams. "This team had an outsized effect on the outcome of the team standings and any event we had a Seawolf in, the Seawolves showed up. We are looking forward to trying to warp up our indoor season at the NCAA Championships and get this group ready for an outdoor season."

Blanca De Arvizu Sarrias led three Seawolves in the final of the 60 hurdles with a third-place in 8.83, the second-fastest time all-time at UAA. Liv Heite was fifth in 8.90, and Mette Van der Meer was sixth in 8.92, the fifth-fastest time ever at UAA.

Anders Larsen finished fourth in the heptathlon with 4,428 points, and Nell Baker placed fifth in the 3,000 (10:16.79).

Joei Vidad and Blanca De Arvizu Sarrias finished fourth and fifth in the 400 in 58.05 and 58.15. The times rank sixth and seventh all-time at UAA. The pair joined Jess Chisar and Sophia Cvancara in the 4x400 that ran to a seventh-place finish in 3:55.41, the seventh-fastest time ever at UAA.

The men's team finished fourth with 70 points and the women's team placed fifth with 58 points.

UAA will compete at the Ken Shannon Last Chance Meet Friday and Saturday.
