ELLENSBURG, WASH. – University of Alaska Anchorage freshman phenom Joshua Caleb broke one school record and two GNAC championship records on the first day of the GNAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships Friday.
Caleb won the prelims of the 100-meter in a championship record of 10.41. The mark was 0.07 off his own school record he set in April. He closed the day winning the prelim of the 200 in 21.04. The time was a new school and GNAC Championship record and ranks tied for second all-time in GNAC history.
The Seawolves picked up a pair of All-GNAC honors in the long jump. Marc Mercier finished second (7.06/23-2) and Vivien Liessfeld was third (5.51/18-1).
Ries Tveit and Avery Williamson each scored in the steeplechase placing sixth (9:38.30) and eighth (11:42.14).
UAA picked up a pair of seventh-place finishes from George Payne in the 10,000 (32:30.38) and Eric Bushnell in the discus (42.08/138-0). Bushnell's throw ranks fourth all-time at UAA.
Liv Heite qualified first for the finals of the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:02.96, the fifth-fastest time ever by a Seawolf. She also qualified second in the 100 hurdles in a time of 14.32.
Three other Seawolves will join Heite in the finals of the 100 hurdles. Blanca De Arvizu Sarrias qualified sixth (14.83), Mikayla Mader seventh (14.86) and Mette Van Der Meer eighth (14.90).
Sarrias qualified sixth in the 400 hurdles (1:04.15).
Kevin Angarita qualified second in the 400 (48.31) and eighth in the 200 (21.86).
Jessica Chisar qualified eighth in the 800 (2:15.71).
"We had a great first day," said head coach Ryan McWilliams. "The events we have student-athletes in, we are competing our tails off. We are looking forward to finishing this meet off with some strong finishes tomorrow."
The UAA men are fifth in the team scores with 21 points and the women are sixth with 17 points.
The GNAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships conclude Saturday.
