ANCHORAGE (May 21) – One of the top junior-college point guards in California is headed north as Alaska Anchorage men's basketball coach
Rusty Osborne announced Tuesday that
Alex Argandar has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Seawolves.
Originally from Modesto, Calif., the 6-2, 175-pound Argandar averaged 7.9 points, 5.2 assists, 1.5 steals and posted a 2.8-to-1 assist-turnover ratio last season for a College of the Sequoias squad that went 27-6, won the Central Valley Conference, and advanced to the CCCAA state championship game. A 37 percent three-point shooter in his two-year career at COS, he posted three 10-assist games and dished at least six assists in 15 contests as a sophomore. Among his top efforts, Argandar had 24 points (9-12 FG) and seven assists in a 71-68 win over Cerritos, 19 points and five assists in a win at West Hills Leemoore, and 12 points in the title-game loss to undefeated West Valley.
"We are excited to welcome Alex to Seawolf Nation," said Osborne, who led the Seawolves to 22 victories and an NCAA Div. II Tournament bid last year. "He is a high-IQ point guard who makes those around him better. He knows how to get his teammates involved, is an on-court leader with a great demeanor, takes care of the basketball, can defend, and has the ability to score when needed. He was an elite quarterback in high school, and displays that football toughness physically and mentally."
Prior to his career at COS, Argandar starred at Modesto Christian High School, where he played in the same program as former Seawolf guard
Dathan Satchell. As a senior, he helped the Crusaders to a 30-6 record and within a victory of the CIF Open Division state title, falling 59-50 to nationally 2nd-ranked Centennial in the championship game.
"Alex is a proven winner at both the high school and JC levels," Osborne added. "With
Trey Evans unexpectedly stepping away from basketball, we needed another experienced point guard to add to our lineup.
Dillon Barrientos and Alex complement each other well, and should be one of the best combinations in the region."
Argandar becomes the fifth player in UAA's 2024 recruiting class, joining fellow JC signees
Tyler Burraston (6-4, 190, G, Draper, Utah/Corner Canyon HS/Green River [Wash.] CC),
Zach Ibbetson (6-3, 180, G, Norco, Calif./NHS/Santiago Canyon College),
John McFadden (6-8, 220, F, San Juan Capistrano, Calif./San Juan Hills HS/Saddleback College), and
Jesse Stines (6-6, 210, F, La Mirada, Calif./Corona HS/Irvine Valley College).
