Caleb leads Seawolves to strong finish at GNAC Championships

BELLINGHAM, WASH. – Joshua Caleb led the University of Alaska Anchorage on the final day of the GNAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

The sophomore from Okrika, Nigeria was named the Men's Track Athlete of the Meet and shared the high point scorer honors with Josh Boast of Central Washington.

Caleb started the day by anchoring the 4x100 relay to the GNAC title in a time of 40.38. The time set all-time GNAC and meet records, in addition to a new UAA school record. Other members included Marc Mercier, Riday Jana and Peyton George.

Caleb won the 100 in a GNAC meet record of 10.25 and won the 200 in 21.04.

He led off the 4x400 that finished third in 3:16.43. Joining Caleb on the relay were Peyton George, AJ Szewczyk and Zuriel Guzman.

Liv Heite was the runner-up in both the 100 hurdles (13.91) and the 400 hurdles (1:01.22). Her 400 hurdle time was the third fastest in school history.

Mette Van der Meer placed third in the 100 hurdles in 14.54, and Lacie Simmons was fourth in 14.70. Simmons finished sixth in the 400 hurdles in 1:05.24.

Ryann Smith ran the untraditional double of 800 and 5,000, finishing second in the 800 (2:11.50) and fourth in the 5,000 (17:33.10).

Alexandra Otto ran 17:24.50 to finish third in the 5,000.

In the men's 100, Riday Jana finished third (10.49) and Enrique Campbell was fourth (10.53).

Charlie Hulbert finished fifth (3:51.87) in the men's 1,500, and Avery Williamson was sixth (4:42.61) in the women's.

Lucia Garcia finished eighth in the 800 (2:18.10), and Vivien Liessfeld was eighth in the javelin (37.59/123-4).

The Seawolves earned 19 All-GNAC honors at this year's GNAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, the most since 2017.

"This was a tough meet," said head coach Ryan McWilliams. "The conference is the strongest it has ever been, and we are an undersized crew. But I can't think of many times I have been prouder of a team that competed through ups and downs, things not going our way, and ending a season as strongly as we have. The UAA record books were almost completely rewritten this year and the trajectory this group of athletes has put the heirs of this program in is something I'm in awe of."

Both the men's and women's teams finished fifth of nine teams.

The Seawolves will compete at the NCAA Div. II Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Pueblo, Colo. May 22-25.
