Herrington, Williams nab major GNAC honors

PORTLAND, Ore. (Mar. 4) – After helping their team to 20 victories and the No. 2 seed at the league tournament, the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball trio of Hasaan Herrington, Sylas Williams and Bishop Tosi earned All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference recognition – including major awards for Herrington and Williams – as the GNAC announced its postseason honors Wednesday.

A 6-3 guard, Herrington was voted First Team All-GNAC and GNAC Defensive Player of the Year by the league's head coaches, while Williams, a 6-7 forward, was tabbed Second Team All-GNAC and the GNAC Newcomer of the Year. Tosi, a 6-6 forward, received an honorable mention All-GNAC nod for the second year in a row.

One of four unanimous selections, Herrington made the first team as perhaps the league's most well-rounded player, averaging 11.4 points, 3.8 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 1.8 steals per game, while shooting .354 from long range and .761 at the foul stripe. The East Anchorage High School product is the only player among the league's top six in both assists and steals, and ranks third in NCAA Div. II with a 3.3-to-1 assist-turnover ratio.

Herrington becomes the first Seawolf to earn the GNAC's Defensive POY award, spearheading a UAA defense that ranks seventh nationally with 63.3 points allowed per game and second in the GNAC in steals (8.8 spg) and opponent field-goal percentage (.423). Among his big games, he had a career-high 24 points (8-12 FG, 4-5 3FG) and nine assists in UAA's home win over MSU Billings, plus 13 points and a career-high 14 assists – the most by a Seawolf in 10 years – in a home win over Central Washington.

Williams is the third Seawolf to claim GNAC Newcomer of the Year and the first since Suki Wiggs in 2015-16, posting a team-high nine double-doubles and leading the league with 7.6 rebounds per game. The 2024-25 NWAC Player of Year at Skagit Valley (Wash.) College, Williams also leads UAA with 12.7 points, 1.6 three-pointers and 0.9 blocks per game. In addition to a career-high 28 points in the home win over Billings, the Bothell, Wash., native produced 22 points and eight rebounds in a win over Chaminade, and 19 points, 11 rebounds and three steals in a victory over Alaska Fairbanks.

Another local product, Tosi is the third-leading scorer (11.0 ppg) and second-leading rebounder (5.0 rpg) for a Seawolf team that carries a 20-9 overall record into Friday's GNAC Championships semifinals in Bellingham, Wash. The former Bartlett High School star ranks among the top-10 percentage shooters in the GNAC at .538, and shoots .761 from the line with a team-high 89 free throws made. Tosi owns UAA's top individual scoring effort with 30 points (13-16 FG) against Central Washington, along with 18-point showings in both games against Western Washington this season.

Also ranked fifth in the NCAA Div. II West Region, the Seawolves face either No. 3 seed Northwest Nazarene or No. 6 seed Alaska Fairbanks in Friday's GNAC semifinals at 4:15 pm AST. Find links to live video ($) and stats at GoSeawolves.com or gnacsports.com.
