SILVER CITY, N.M. (Jan. 10) - Senior guard Chris Hamey scored 17 points and dished out six assists to help the UAA men's basketball team to an 89-63 non-conference victory over Western New Mexico at Mustang Fieldhouse on Monday. The winning margin was UAA's biggest over a Division II opponent on the road since a 131-87 victory over Alaska Fairbanks in 1990.
Senior center Serge Using came up a point short of another double-double, finishing with 9 points and 11 rebounds for the Seawolves (8-4, 1-1 Pac West). Jon Madison chipped in 16 points, while junior Greg Freeman added 13. Senior Chris Lewis had 11 points in just 11 minutes of action. Doug Barnes led the way for Western New Mexico (3-9, 0-2) with 12 points.
The Seawolves outrebounded the smaller Mustangs 36-33, while dishing out 20 assists with just six turnovers. UAA also held WNMU to just five free throw attempts while getting to the line 15 times.
UAA finishes its 7-game, 16,000-mile road trip Thursday at Chaminade (8:30 p.m. AST) and Saturday at Hawaii-Hilo (9 p.m. AST).
