ANCHORAGE (Dec. 2) - Missouri-Rolla center Brian Westre scored 30 points, including the game-winning basket with 36 seconds remaining to lift the Miners to a 78-76 victory over host UAA in the final game of the AT&T Alascom Jamboree at the Sports Center.
Peter Bullock scored 11 points for UAA (0-6), but his game-tying attempt in the lane bounced twice and fell off in the final seconds. UMR (4-1) was aided by 19 points from All-Jamboree selection Scott Holly.
UAA, which led by as much as 58-44 with 15 minutes left, slowly let the lead slip away, committing 10 of its 13 turnovers in the second half. A layup by Westre with 1:43 remaining gave UMR its first lead, 75-74, since 29-28 late in the first half.
UAA's Ty Shippen (14 points, 6 steals) then hit a pair of free throws to put UAA up 76-75. But Westre converted on a feed from Holly and, after a UAA turnover, he made one of two free throws to account for the final margin.
UAA's 0-6 start is the worst in school history, and ties the school record of six losses in a row, set during the 1978-79 and 1979-80 seasons.
Shippen and Bullock were both named to the All-Jamboree Team, along with Holly and Westre of UMR.
UAA got a big lift off the bench from freshman G.J. Macon, who scored 10 of his career-high 15 points in the second half and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Nathon Glover (11 points) and Cody Gallatin (10) made it five Seawolves in double-figures.
However, UAA could not stop Westre or grab an important rebound. The Miners beat UAA 47-31 on the boards, including 12 by Westre.
UAA next travels to Fairbanks on Thursday to face arch-rival UAF at 7 p.m. at the Patty Center. It will be the Great Northwest Athletic Conference debut for both teams.
