#25 Seawolves outrace Eagles

ANCHORAGE – Junior guard Kyle Fossman had career-highs of 28 points, nine rebounds and seven steals Saturday as the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team pulled away for a 111-81 men's basketball victory over Northwest Indian College at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

The Seawolves (8-2), ranked No. 25 in NCAA Div. II, got 12 or more points from all of their starters in the first-ever meeting between the schools.

The Eagles, from Bellingham, Wash., were led by 22 points and six steals from forward Douglas Williams, while guard Mike Schjiang tallied 21 points on 9-of-13 shooting. NWIC's record falls to 10-12, including games against junior-college competition.

Playing for the first time since Dec. 1, the Seawolves fell behind 15-12 in the early going before sophomore Teancum Stafford sparked the offense, scoring 11 of his 22 points in the opening stanza. UAA slowly pulled away in the second half as Fossman – the team's leading scorer – knocked down five of his six three-pointers in the final 20 minutes.

Fossman, a 6-0 shooting guard from Haines, also tied for the 4th-most steals in program history, coming two shy of Tyrone Jones' school record of nine in a game. It marked the most steals for a Seawolf since Jim Hajdukovich had seven on Jan. 31, 1998 against Seattle Pacific.

The Seawolves also got double-doubles from senior center Liam Gibcus and sophomore forward Christian Leckband. Gibcus tallied a career-high 25 points on 10-of-15 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds for his third career double-double, while Leckband had 13 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, accounting for career-bests in all three categories.

Junior guard Colton Lauwers recorded a game-high six assists with no turnovers.

UAA used only eight players as Stephan Heard, Collin Spickerman and Abebe Demissie were all held out because of illness and injury.

The game was the final counting non-conference affair for UAA this season, although the Seawolves and Eagles will meet in an exhibition rematch Saturday at 5 p.m.

NOTES: Fossman now has 109 career three-pointers, passing currently redshirting teammate Travis Thompson for No. 16 on UAA's all-time list … on the program's all-time lists, UAA's 111 points tied for the 28th-most in a game, and the 63 points after halftime tied for the 10th-most in a second half … freshman guard John Erickson scored his first career field goal, knocking down a three-pointer from the corner midway through the first half … Gibcus now has three double-doubles in his last 11 games, including the 2011-12 season finale … the win ties Gibcus with Butch Lincoln (1992-93, 94-97) for No. 9 on UAA's career victories list with 69.
