UAA blitzes Hawks in 2nd half, 93-60

ANCHORAGE – Junior wing Teancum Stafford tallied 19 points and 12 rebounds to lead a second-half charge Friday as host Alaska Anchorage pulled away for a 93-60 men's basketball victory over Holy Names in the AT&T Jamboree at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

The Seawolves (3-1) also got 23 points and five assists from junior guard Travis Thompson, 22 points from senior guard Kyle Fossman and 15 points and nine assists from sophomore point guard Brian McGill to win their home opener.

The Hawks (0-2), from Oakland, Calif., got 14 points apiece from forward Harold Perry and reserve guard Dante Robinson in the first-ever meeting between the programs.

UAA led just 45-39 at halftime as the visitors from the Pacific West Conference shot 56 percent (15 of 27) over the first 20 minutes. The Seawolves took over quickly in the second half, however, with Stafford scoring eight points during a 13-2 run to start the stanza. Thompson fed Fossman for one of his six three-pointers at the 12:53 mark, putting the Seawolves ahead 65-43, and the lead ballooned to 87-55 on Thompson's final trey with 4:18 to play.

Stafford finished with a career-high in rebounds as the Auburn, Wash., native tallied his second career double-double thanks to 7-of-12 shooting. Fossman shot 8 of 15 (6 of 12 3FGs), while Thompson was 7 of 13 overall (5 of 9 3FGs) and 4 of 4 at the charity stripe. McGill – making his home debut after redshirting as a transfer from Western Oregon last year – was a perfect 7 of 7 at the free-throw line and committed only one turnover in 30 minutes.

UAA also got a solid outing from freshman post Jackson McTier, who grabbed five rebounds, along with three points, one assist and one steal in his first career start. Senior Colton Lauwers came off the bench to dish six assists with no turnovers and five rebounds.

The Seawolves return to the court Saturday at 3 p.m. when they meet Regis (1-0) in the Jamboree's finale. Holy Names faces Alaska Fairbanks (0-1) in the early game at 1 p.m.

NOTES: Fossman moved into fourth place on UAA's career three-pointers list with 159, passing Scott Larrabee (157, 1996-2000), Adam Fitt-Chappell (158, 2002-06) and Chris Hamey (158, 1995-2000) … Thompson rose to 15th on the career treys list, tied now with Taylor Wagner (1999-2001) at 121 … UAA improved to 39-7 all-time in the Jamboree, extending its current win streak to 15 in the annual event … UAA and Holy Names play again Sunday in a game that is not considered part of the Jamboree.
