Thompson's 30 pace UAA past Regis, 88-74

ANCHORAGE – Junior guard Travis Thompson scored 30 points and senior guard Kyle Fossman added 21 points Saturday as host Alaska Anchorage defeated Regis 88-74 in the final game of the AT&T Jamboree basketball tournament at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

The Seawolves (4-1) also got 13 points and eight assists from sophomore point guard Brian McGill to capture the Jamboree's unofficial title.

The Rangers (1-1) were led by 12 points and 11 rebounds from former Seawolf guard Mike MacKelvie, who transferred to the Denver school over the summer. All-Jamboree selection Jon Conley, a 6-4 forward, led the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference squad with 15 points, along with seven rebounds.

UAA took the lead for good just three minutes into the action when Fossman was fouled on a three-point attempt and sank his charities for a 10-8 advantage. Regis shaved a pair of double-digit deficits down to just 33-29 with 6:18 on the clock, but Thompson and Fossman combined for three straight treys to give UAA a 49-36 lead at the break.

The Rangers got within eight points on a pair of occasions in the second half, however the Seawolves answered each run and kept the lead in double figures for the final 13 minutes.

Thompson, a 6-1 guard from Anchorage (Dimond HS), connected on 7 of 13 from the field (4-10 3FG) and 12 of 13 at the free-throw line, helping UAA to a 28-12 edge in charity shots. Fossman scored 17 points in the first half, finishing 6 of 11 overall (4-7 3FG) and 5 of 5 at the line. The senior from Haines added five assists with just one turnover in 39 minutes.

Thompson was named the Jamboree's Most Outstanding Player and was joined on the all-tourney team by Fossman, McGill and junior wing Teancum Stafford, who had 10 points and a team-high six rebounds. Coming off a redshirt season, Thompson has now averaged 22.8 ppg over the first five games, including a pair of 30-point outings.

The Seawolves play one more game this weekend, facing on Holy Names (0-3) in a Sunday 5 p.m. tip-off at the WFSC.

NOTES: Senior guard Colton Lauwers scored five points and grabbed a career-high-tying three steals … the game marked the first-ever meeting between UAA and Regis on the hardwood … combined with Friday's 93-60 AT&T Jamboree win over Holy Names, the Seawolves won two games in a 24-hour period for the second time this season – UAA beat Lindenwood and No. 5 Minnesota State within a 15-hour span Nov. 8-9 at the CCA Div. II Tip-Off Classic in Anaheim.
