Seawolves ground Eagles for first victory

ANCHORAGE – Freshman forward Kalidou Diouf scored 27 points to pace the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team Friday in a 110-67 victory over Northwest Indian College.

Junior point guard Brian McGill added seven points, 14 assists and nine rebounds to help the Seawolves (1-4) secure their first win in the brand-new Alaska Airlines Center.

The Eagles (0-7), from Bellingham, Wash., were led by 21 points from guard Kacy Green.

The Seawolves scored off the opening tip and trailed only briefly, 3-2, before scoring the next 10 points. UAA led only 29-22 after 12 minutes, but Derrick Fain scored five straight points and Travis Thompson hit consecutive three-pointers to start a 19-0 run. The halftime lead stretched to 56-31 as the Seawolves wound up shooting a season-high 54.5 percent (42-77) for the game.

Diouf, a redshirt freshman from Heidelberg, Germany, used a lopsided size advantage to register one of the best shooting performances in school history, hitting 13 of 14 shots from the field. Thompson added 13 points, while Fain and junior guard Dom Hunter chipped in 12 points each.

Twelve of the 13 Seawolves who saw action cracked the scoring column, including nine points (3-6 3FG) from junior guard Kevin Bowman and eight points apiece from Christian Leckband and Travis Parrish. Leckband shot 3 of 3 from the field, plus five rebounds, four assists and no turnovers in 20 minutes.

The only Seawolf who didn't score was senior guard Boomer Blossom, but the Soldotna native dished six assists in just 17 minutes.

The Seawolves and Eagles complete their two-game set Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Alaska Airlines Center.
