Wiggs's school-record 46 powers GNAC-opening win at Central

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Senior guard Suki Wiggs set a school record with 46 points Thursday to power Alaska Anchorage to a 98-92 victory over Central Washington in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's basketball opener for both teams at Nicholson Pavilion.

The Seawolves (5-2, 1-0 GNAC) also got 21 points from senior wing Spencer Svejcar and 16 rebounds from senior forward Corey Hammell to fend off a late charge by Central.

The Wildcats (4-2, 0-1) were led by 30 points and five assists from guard Dom Hunter, but the hosts were outshot 61 percent (30-49) to 53 percent (33-62) and outrebounded 30-23.

UAA started red-hot from the field and barely slowed down as the night progressed. The Seawolves made their first eight three-point tries and shot 65 percent overall in the opening 20 minutes to build a 56-44 lead.

The Seawolves kept their advantage at double figures for much of the second half until the Wildcats got hot from long range themselves, slicing their deficit to single digits with 4:22 left. After Diante Mitchell made two free throws for a 90-81 lead, Central answered with consecutive three-pointers by Naim Ladd to make it a one-possession game.

Mitchell converted bank shot to make it 92-87, and the Wildcats responded again with a trey from Hunter with 30.7 seconds remaining. Wiggs was fouled on the ensuing inbounds play and made two free throws to push the lead back to 94-90 and surpass Jesse Jackson's previous program record of 43 points, set Feb. 21, 1986 against Seattle Pacific.

Central missed its next shot and Wiggs and Mitchell sealed victory with four free throws in the final seconds.

In addition to his scoring record – which tied for the third-best performance in GNAC history – Wiggs tied Adam Fitt-Chappell's UAA single-game record for three-point accuracy, shooting 7 of 8 (.875) from outside the arc.

Meanwhile, Hammell posted his seventh career game with at least 15 rebounds, tying for the second-most such performances Seawolf history.

Svejcar shot 4 of 5 from long range and grabbed a pair of steals while playing 39 minutes and coming just two points shy of his career high.

Mitchell finished with a game-high seven assists and 12 points, and senior center Connor Devine had 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting.

The Seawolves finish their road trip Saturday with a 5 p.m. AST game against Northwest Nazarene in Nampa, Idaho. Surf to gnac.tv to follow the live videostream and stats
