SPOKANE, WASH. – Joshua Caleb ran to two meet records and three Seawoves ran to All-GNAC honors to highlight day one action at the GNAC indoor Track and Field Championships Monday.
Caleb started his day by running 6.70 in the prelims of the 60. His time set a new school, GNAC and GNAC Championship record. Caleb ran just off his personal best but set a GNAC Championship record in the 200 in 21.49.
Nell Baker earned All-GNAC honors in the 5,000 placing second in 17:33.32.
Vivien Liessfeld earned a pair of all-conference accolades. She finished third in the long jump (18-0.5) and third in the pentathlon with 3,125 points, fifth-best mark in school history. Her shot put mark (33-6) ranks third all-time at UAA and her high jump mark (4-9.5) ranks ninth all-time.
Michael Zapherson earned All-GNAC honors with a third-place finish in the 5,000 (14:42.48). Teammate John Peckham finished fifth (14:49.80).
The men's distance medley relay finished fifth (10:30.48), and Marc Mercier placed sixth in the long jump (22-0.75).
The Seawolves had several sprinters qualify for Tuesday's finals.
The women's 60 hurdles were a bright spot for the Seawolves with three hurdlers advancing. Blanca De Arvizu Sarrias finished second after running the second-fastest time all-time at UAA at 8.86. Metta Van der Meer ran 8.95, the fifth-fastest time at UAA, to place third. Liv Heite placed fourth in 8.98.
Kevin Angarita qualified second in the 200, behind teammate Joshua Caleb, in the 200 after running 21.78, the third-fastest time in school history. Angarita finished first in the prelims of the 400 in 48.51.
Jess Chisar will be the second-seed in the final of the 800 after running 2:14.46 in the prelims.
Blanca De Arvizu Sarrias and Joei Vidad both qualified for the final of the 400. Sarrias ran 58.32, the seventh-fastest time at UAA, and Vidad ran 58.56, the ninth-fastest time.
Anders Larsen sits in second place with 2,632 points at the end of day one of the heptathlon. His first day was highlighted by the 60 where he scored 785 points with a time of 7.28.
UAA had four other Seawolves post top-10 times, Felix Robertson in the men's 60 hurdles (9.00, tied for eighth), Lacie Simmons in the women's 60 hurdles (9.27, 10th), Riday Jana in the men's 200 (22.23, 10th) and Liv Heite in the 400 (59.16).
Both the UAA men and women are in fifth place in the team standings.
The GNAC Indoor Track and Field Championships conclude Tuesday.
