Kirk, Wagner boost Seawolves past Seasiders

LAIE, Hawaii - The backcourt duo of Ed Kirk and Taylor Wagner combined for 46 points to propel the University of Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team to a 100-84 victory over host Brigham Young-Hawaii at the Cannon Activities Center tonight.

Kirk scored 24 points and Wagner 22 for a UAA team that took a one-game lead over Montana State-Billings in the Pac West Pacific Division. UAA improved to 15-7 overall and 9-4 in the league, while BYU, which was led by Kerry Hendrickson's 29 points, fell to 13-10, 7-7.

UAA came out shooting well and continued that trend until the final buzzer. The Seawolves shot 58.8 percent in the first half as they took a 51-38 lead into the locker room, and the second half was more of the same as they ripped the cords at 69.6 percent (16-263) to finish the game at a season-best 63.2 percent.

Wagner was 8-for-13, Kirk 9-for-14 and Greg Freeman shot 8-for-14 as he racked up 18 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman forward Peter Bullock shot 5-for-6 and reserves Garrett Abbott and Shaun O'Shea both went 2-for-2.

Combined with Saturday's win at Hawaii Pacific, it is the first time UAA has won two games in the Islands since the 1997-98 campaign.

UAA, ranked eighth nationally in points per game, went over 80 points for the 15th straight time and topped the century mark for the fifth time this season.

The Seawolves return home for a first-place showdown with MSU-Billings Friday and Saturday at the Sports Center. Friday's game begins at 7:05 p.m. and Saturday at 8 p.m. It marks the beginning of a stretch that sees the Seawolves home for four of their final five regular-season games.
