ANCHORAGE - Senior guard Ed Kirk exploded for all 22 of his points in the second half and the University of Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team set a school record for three-pointers in a 111-91 romp over Montana State-Billings at the Sports Center Saturday night.
The win gives UAA (17-7, 11-4 Pac West) a two-game lead over Hawaii-Hilo in the Pacific Division race, pending the outcome of Hilo's game at Hawaii Pacific late Saturday. Billings (16-8, 8-7) got 23 points and nine rebounds from center Dan Carter.
The Seawolves made seven straight threes in the second half to blow the game open. Kirk began the shooting display with 16:12 left and the Yellowjackets trailing only 64-59. Cody Gallatin and Greg Freeman each knocked down a pair of bombs in the run and Kirk capped it with 10:52 remaining, putting UAA up 85-67. UAA's 19 threes broke the school record of 18, set last season at Carver College.
The Seawolves, who got 22 points from Freeman and 15 from Gallatin, shot over 50 percent for the fourth straight game - all victories.
While he was held scoreless in the first half, Kirk was able dish out four of his career-high-tying 10 assists as UAA built a 54-45 advantage. In the second stanza, the Pac West's leading scorer and assist man shot 7-for-12 overall, 4-for-6 on threes and 4-for-4 at the line. He finished with seven rebounds and only one turnover in 34 minutes.
Taylor Wagner (11 points), Nathon Glover (11) and Peter Bullock (10) joined the double-digit scoring parade for the Seawolves. Brian Cook kept the Yellowjackets close early with 21 points and 11 rebounds, while Danny Phillips hit six threes on his way to a 20-point night.
Billings entered the series as Division II's top-scoring team at 97.1 ppg, but the Seawolves also rank among the nation's elite in 10th place with 90.0 ppg.
The Seawolves return to the Sports Center court Monday when they will try to clinch the Division title against Western New Mexico (1-23, 1-14) at 7:05 p.m.
