ANCHORAGE (Nov. 19) - The Seawolves had six players score double-figures and shot 52 percent, but couldn't put away the visitors from Grand Canyon in a 70-66 men's basketball loss in the annual AT&T Alascom Jamboree tonight.
Brian Hills and Adam Fitt-Chappell led the Seawolves (1-1) with 12 points apiece, while Grand Canyon (1-0) got a game-high 20 points from guard Prileu Davis and 14 from forward Mike Daye.
The Seawolves trailed by as many as 14 points after GCU opened the second half with a basket to make it 42-28. A 23-9 run by the Seawolves erased that deficit however, and UAA went up 53-51 on a pair of free throws by Marcus Robinson (10 points) with 8:31 left.
Neither team could pull away after that, with the largest lead on either side stretching to just three points. Seawolf freshman Carl Arts (11 points, 5-6 FG, 7 rebounds) scored a pair of late buckets that kept the game tied, including a put-back with 1:08 left that made the score 64-64.
But Grand Canyon guard Curtis Green hit a short jumper to give the Antelopes the lead for good with 46 seconds left. The Seawolves would only get a pair of Robinson free throws the rest of the way as Davis sealed the game with two free throws with 5 seconds to go.
Despite their solid shooting, the Seawolves were done in by 23 turnovers.
Junior center Bryan Freshwater (10 points, 5-6 FG) and junior swingman James Hartman (11 points, 3-4 3FG) were the other Seawolves to score in double figures, while Hills supplemented his effort with 8 rebounds and 5 blocks.
The Seawolves are back in action Saturday at 8 p.m. as they get their final tune-up before the Nov. 24-27 Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout. UAA will face an alumni team in the Jamboree's final game, following Grand Canyon vs. Caldwell College at 6 p.m.
UAA opens the men's Shootout on Nov. 24 at 7:30 p.m. AST against nationally ranked Alabama at the Sullivan Arena. That game will be televised live on ESPN2.
